Detoxing my social media feed

Comparing your real life to the online content of others and scrolling aimlessly.

If you're like me, you probably spend hours of your day scrolling through Instagram for no reason. I mean what else was there to do during the pandemic.. right? Jk but seriously though I recently did a social media cleaning on my Instagram. I watch a lot of reality tv. I used to work in a very busy mental health clinic where I was seeing so many clients per day and listening to so many sad stories. At the end of the day, I was driving in L.A traffic for almost 4 hours sometimes round trip to and from work. By the time I got home I was TIRED. Mentally, emotionally, physically, and my eyes hurt. I mean what would you rather watch after one of these days? Maybe something that doesn't require a lot of brain power and is entertaining? I get invested into these reality shows where I sit and watch every episode that comes out every week. I started following a lot of reality TV starts and celebrities.

Following our favorite celebs and reality starts is completely fine. For me it just became overwhelming after a while. Most of these posts just started to seem to inauthentic and superficial. There was so many pictures with people living seemingly perfect lives. Perfect hair, perfect make up, perfect wardrobe, perfectly placed everything. Its not real.

The Mass Unfollowing

Have you ever went on an unfriending binge on Facebook? Well I did that but the Instagram version. I went on an unfollowing binge 👋 I decided to unfollow almost every reality star and celeb I was following. It was soo freeing in a weird way. I was finally seeing posts from friends and just average normal people (in a good way of course). Its nice. I really like seeing pictures of people's days, families, kids, and accomplishments. It makes me warm and fuzzy inside. Oh and pet pics. Can't forget the pets. So keep them coming :)

Lets Keep it Real

Social media can be a good thing.

At the end of the day, I'm still scrolling aimlessly through Instagram and social media.. lol. BUT... at least I'm seeing people I know or acquaintances or random humans who are not IG famous. Social media can be a good thing. Especially now as an adult when life gets busy or you just want to be a home body. I just send an IG message and keep up with people there (yes this counts as keeping in touch right?). Have you ever did a social media cleanse? Let me know how that went for you.
